Tesla’s Official Launch in India: A Detailed Blog Post

Based on the video, this blog post provides a detailed overview of the official launch of Tesla in India, focusing on the Model Y and its key features.

Pricing and Variants

The Tesla Model Y has been launched in India with two variants:

  • Standard Rear-Wheel-Drive: Starts at an ex-showroom price of ₹60 lakh.
  • Long-Range Rear-Wheel-Drive: Starts at ₹68 lakh.

An additional ₹6 lakh is required for the self-drive autopilot option. The Model 3 and all-wheel-drive Model Y are not currently available in India.

Customization and Additional Costs

The base price of ₹60 lakh includes only the grey color with a black interior. Customizing the car with different colors and interiors will increase the price:

  • Colors: Red and quicksilver colors cost an extra ₹1.85 lakh.
  • Interior: A white interior costs an additional ₹95,000.
  • Customization can add an extra ₹2.5 to ₹3 lakh to the total cost.

Why is it so Expensive?

The high price is primarily due to India’s import duty structure, which imposes a 70-80% tax on cars valued over $40,000. Since the cars are fully imported from Shanghai, China, this results in an import duty of approximately ₹21 lakh per unit. Prices may decrease in the future if a free trade agreement is established between India and the European Union.

Specifications and Features

  • Standard Version: Comes with a 65 kWh LFP battery, a claimed range of around 500 km, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
  • Long-Range Version: Features a 75 kWh NMC battery with a WLTP range of around 622 km.

Both models are feature-packed with power-reclining, heated, and ventilated seats, a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, and a nine-speaker sound system. They also include a 15.4-inch front display and an 8-inch rear display, with full control available via an app.

Battery and Charging

The Model Y is compatible with fast chargers up to 250 kW, although most DC fast chargers in India have a lower capacity of 25 to 60 kW.

Warranty and Bookings

The car comes with a 4-year or 80,000 km warranty, while the battery has a separate 8-year warranty. Bookings have already started, with deliveries for the long-range version expected in October.
